What is Unity?

Unity is positive, practical Christianity. We teach the effective, daily application of the principles of Truth taught and exemplified by Jesus Christ. We promote a way of life that leads to health, prosperity, happiness, and peace of mind.

Unity has established centers of study and worship throughout the world where people discover and practice the Unity way of life. We address physical, mental, and emotional needs through affirmative prayer and spiritual education. We serve those who seek inspiration and prayer support as well as those who use Unity teachings as their primary path of spiritual growth.

We believe that all people are created with sacred worth, and we strive to reach out to all who seek support and spiritual growth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. Our ministries and outreaches are free of discrimination on the basis of race, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability, and sexual orientation.

Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Mrs. Fillmore's remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations, many friends became interested in how she accomplished this healing. Unity grew from small prayer circles in living rooms to the worldwide movement it is today.

Unity is a not-for-profit organization based on the teachings of Jesus and the healing power of prayer. Our world headquarters in Unity Village, Missouri, provides a tranquil atmosphere for quiet meditation and a place for all people, regardless of faith or nationality, to worship.

Unity's prayer, publishing, and education ministries allow us to provide people all ov
er the world with positive, spiritual messages of hope, healing, prosperity, and peace.

Unity's Prayer Ministry
Prayer is the foundation and the heart of our work. For over one hundred years, Unity has been dedicated to helping people through prayer. Silent Unity, the prayer ministry of Unity, responds to nearly two million requests from people who write, call, or e-mail for prayer support throughout the year. A vigil of prayer is maintained in Silent Unity around the clock to pray for those who request prayer.

Unity's Publishing Ministry
Unity operates one of the largest religious publishing houses in the Midwest, offering hundreds of books, pamphlets, CDs, and tapes on a variety of spiritual subjects. Our Message of Hope literature is distributed to hospitals, prisons, nonprofit organizations, and the military. Unity also publishes two magazines to inspire and advance personal growth.

Daily Word is a monthly magazine of daily inspirational messages published in 7 languages and distributed in 137 countries. It includes affirmations, prayers and a monthly calendar.

Unity Magazine is a bimonthly magazine filled with articles written to encourage spiritual education and development.

A Little History
The Unity churches evolved from a prayer group started by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore in Kansas City, Missouri in the 1890s. The couple had attended a talk in 1886 by a student of Emma Curtis Hopkins’ metaphysical seminary in Chicago. Myrtle, who had been diagnosed with “inherited” TB, took away from that lecture the message that “I am a child of God and therefore I do not inherit illness.” She studied her Bible and prayed for healing with such great results that she was soon leading groups of neighbors. Over the next several months she was healed and so were others. Charles, observing her, decided to try his version of the same work and, in time, found his damaged hip and shortened leg restored.

They formed Silent Unity to assist others in prayer, also the Unity School of Practical Christianity, and began to publish several magazines, among them The Daily Word, now read by millions, worldwide.    Charles Fillmore accepted Hopkins’ idea that with spiritual development comes both healing and prosperity. They used prayer and practical good sense to finance their work.

They built offices and classroom buildings in Kansas City and then, after World War I, moved to a farm in Lees Summit, Missouri, which is now known worldwide as Unity Village, the home of Unity Institute, Spirit Renewal Center, and the Association of Unity Churches.
